Events

 1886

France commissioned a statue to honor the United States' democracy after the Civil War and gave it to the nation. To honor the 100th anniversary of US independence in 1876. The artist's works include a torch-wielding woman statue.

1929

On October 24, 1929, the stock market had one of the largest drops in history, which is regarded as one of the major events that contributed to the Great Depression. This incident is known as "Black Thursday."

 1939

The 1939 World's Fair opened on the 150th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration. Over 206,000 people came on the first day, and President Roosevelt made an opening statement. The principal goal of the fair was to use the technological advances on display to help the nation escape the depression.

 2001

The September 11 attacks, otherwise known as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks committed in 2001 in Manhattan, New York City, by an Islamic extremist terrorist group known as Al Qaeda.
