Statue of Liberty Opening (1886)

After the American Civil War came to a close, France made the decision to recognize the United States' successful pursuit of democracy by commissioning the creation of a statue that they would then give to the country. To commemorate the one-hundredth year since the United States of America declared its independence in 1876 (Mackintosh). The artist has created a number of images, one of which is a statue of a woman holding a torch in her hand. The statue was assembled by the combined efforts of a number of people. Copper, iron, and steel were the three primary components that went into its construction. In the process of constructing the statue, the torch and the right hand were assembled initially (Porsche, 2008).

In the year 1876, Bartholdi had works displayed in Philadelphia at an exhibition. Attendees of the fair could get a better look at the statue by climbing up a ladder that led inside of it. In the year 1884, the statue was finally finished and unveiled in Paris, the capital of France. (Bartholdi, 1885). People from both France and the United States of America have been good friends for a significant amount of time. One individual from France made the decision to give a present to the United States in order to express his gratitude for the country's culture of valuing individual liberty. As a token of appreciation, a huge statue was offered. The statue would be meant to represent the mutual respect that is held between the two countries. In the year 1886, the people of France presented the statue to the United States of America as a gift. There was a presentation that took place, and the President of the United States was there to watch it. The first day of the event was the one that included the main celebration. In order to get a good view of the events, attendees filled the boats in New York Harbor. There were several different speeches delivered. It was known as "The Great Day of Freedom," and many people celebrated it. The removal of the French flag that had been covering the face of the Statue of Liberty for such a long time by the statue's designer, Bartholdi, brought a sense of relief to the general public.

The year 1980 was a watershed moment in the history of the United States, as it was the year that American citizens made the decision to start the country over again. Donations of money were given to help those who were struggling financially. When they were finished, the Statue shone brightly from the inside out. Additionally, the ladder was changed out. Its significance now lies in the fact that it is seen as a symbol of freedom. The Statue of Liberty is often regarded as one of the world's most breathtaking landmarks. It is a powerful reminder to visitors from all across the world that freedom is highly appreciated by people everywhere.
